Ergocalciferol is involved in the regulation of calcium homeostasis. It increases intestinal absorption and renal reabsorption of both calcium and phosphate. The resulting increase in calcium levels promotes bone mineralisation.

Dose information

10-20 micrograms or 400-800 international units daily.

Precautions

Renal impairment: Patients with severe renal impairment are unable to convert ergocalciferol to its active form.Patients should follow dietary recommendations for dairy products and avoid sudden increases in dietary calcium intake as this may cause hypercalcemia. Concurrent administration of vitamin D substances and calcium supplement should be avoided because of risk of hypercalcaemia, unless the patient's dietary intake is inadequate. Ergocalciferol should be stopped immediately if hypercalcemia occurs.
